Retaining walls. Retaining walls are necessary when you have a slope, or when you'd like to create a grade change for a more dramatic appearance in your landscape. They are called retaining walls because they retain soil on one side. Be sure to check your local city code for guidelines on creating retaining
retaining walls, as walls over a certain height — 3 feet for example — may need to be planned by a landscape architect or structural engineer. The last thing you want is a failed retaining wall that poses a safety risk and leads to an expensive repair, so many of these types of projects are best left to

I'm building a barn on a steep slope and love the look of this wall. How was the wall built? Is the wood just cladding material?
This wall was constructed using 4x6 pressure treated posts set into 5' deep concrete piers with 3x12 pressure treated boards bolted to the back of the posts. The front cladding is vertical grain 1x4 cedar which has been stained. Good Luck. R.R

Carbon steel walls to hold terraced lawn
I like the wall, but would want it in stone
Battering the retaining walls this way makes for a stronger wall, as the overturning force is greatest at the base, and the wall is positioned in a way to restrain that force. True in material and form, the steel becomes another texture and color in the landscape, highlighting an intentionally engineered i

Given the freeze/thaw effects in this climate, here did you locate drainage points behind this wall, and where do they exit? How tall is this wall at it's highest point? Thank you.
, the wall is approximately 3' at its highest point. Because of the minimal hgt. and the soil profile on the Cape_ssandy and not a heavy soil, no weep holes were required.

stone retaining wall is being "reorganized". The mesh fabric backing the stones needs to be replaced. Can you advise a backing material? Thank you in advance for your response to this question.
stack wall and have some retaining properties, we typically start by pouring a concrete footing. We then begin stacking the stone, as the wall rises we pour a solid concrete wall behind the stack stone reinforced with re-bar, grouting back of stones into new concrete wall. This will lock the stones

Retaining wall areas are great places in which to strut your planting prowess. Plants that might otherwise go unnoticed at ankle level are elevated where they can be viewed, caressed and sniffed. Have your wall play hide and seek by growing spillers like rosemary, campanula, carpet roses or stonecrop
behind the wall with porous gravel wrapped in filter fabric, and with weep holes to allow excess water to drain out of the root zone. And research native plants that have adapted to similar growing conditions in their evolution.Next: How to Pick the Right Floor for Your Garden Room
