Rollamatic Retractable Roofs
The best view from a home is typically from the roof. And if that view includes a famous bridge, beach or skyline, every effort should be made to gain access to it. Here in San Francisco, a deck on the roof adds ridiculous value to homes that are already ridiculously expensive! And it's the same story from Brooklyn to Venice Beach.
The challenge with stairways running to the roof: they've always required a stair enclosure, and that means adding one more story - something that the building department - and neighbors - typically won't agree to.
The solution: a motorized retractable roof.

The client for this home wanted a modern structure that was suitable for displaying her art-glass collection. Located in a recently developed community, almost every component of the exterior was subject to an array of neighborhood and city ordinances. These were all accommodated while maintaining modern sensibilities and detailing on the exterior, then transitioning to a more minimalist aesthetic on the interior. The one-story building comfortably spreads out on its large lot, embracing a front and back courtyard and allowing views through and from within the transparent center section to other parts of the home. A high volume screened porch, the floating fireplace, and an axial swimming pool provide dramatic moments to the otherwise casual layout of the home.

This 1925 Jackson street penthouse boasts 2,600 square feet with an additional 1,000 square foot roof deck. Having only been remodeled a few times the space suffered from an outdated, wall heavy floor plan. Updating the flow was critical to the success of this project. An enclosed kitchen was opened up to become the hub for gathering and entertaining while an antiquated closet was relocated for a sumptuous master bath. The necessity for roof access to the additional outdoor living space allowed for the introduction of a spiral staircase. The sculptural stairs provide a source for natural light and yet another focal point.
