That looks like honed black granite, but could possibly be soapstone.
If this were in New England, I'd be more inclined to say it might be Soapstone...
...but since it lacks any graining, is in Illinois, and has hard inside corners along the
similar to soapstone in matte finishes. Soapstone is unique because it changes over time which just adds to it's beauty.

Soapstone comes in different slab options but I'm not sure if it's actually called by different color names. I've seen it more green, or gray, or black - but it always seems to be a bit green. It also depends if it's oiled or not.
sort of Swedish classic! Like the greenish counter with white cupboards.
i saw this soapstone.. and its in our price range.. would
have some counter space in that area as a landing spot when putting groceries away or during food prep.
