because this house was done for a client from Houston. The firebox itself is a box of 1/4"steel plate lined with firebrick and it sits on a grid of 4 steel plate risers. The exterior shell is 1/4"steel plate that is separated from the actual firebox by 6"-8" of airspace or so due to the taper of the sides
The space at the bottom of the base is open at the top between the outer wall and the "toe kick" piece which allows air circulation all around the firebox and adds a nice reveal detail. I have attached a construction photo that shows a little more detail. Glad you like the design. It has been very popular
