Emily's right. That is a gas cooktop. The client wanted easy access to spices while cooking and the kitchen is pretty tight on space so we tried to make every nook and cranny useful.

I prefer knife blocks - but that's only because I don't have enough drawers to devote one to be fitted
trying to be dramatic, just practical. the other thing is that if they are out in the open, they won't stay very clean. i prefer a knife block or a drawer that is specific for storing knives.
