Stair runners shouldn't end at the top of the stairs - They should continue as the carpet for the upper hallway.
The stairs are 3'-4" wide. Typically, I like stairs to be at least four feet wide,
and down stairs, something that is more and more important as we age.
I would discourage you from doing a spiral stair. I find them cumbersome, especially if this is a stair you would use a lot. It is also pretty impossible to get any furniture up a spiral stair...

where this runner was purchased was never made known to us. It was actaully found by an interior designer somewhere in Madison, WI and this designer actaully surged together two separate area rugs to make one large runner.
