easier to keep warm from a single fireplace in the dead of winter - and easier to clean out in the springtime when the family needed to be out working the fields.

finishing an attic could have different pros and cons than a 100 year old home.
Pros of any aged home: Additional square footage to enjoy, live in, can add this on to your square footage when selling your home.
Cons, depending on the age - it may not be structurally sound, or may need additional heating/
expensive to heat and cool the attic, if it wasn't properly insulated when the home was built.
Either way, an attic can be a great amenity. Deciding on if it is right for you and your family home is another story. :)

this hard to do? I mentioned in an earlier page, my Contractor would not add a staircase to my attic (although it was discussed from the beginning!)
