I am trying to do a very similar thing. They guy I have building the shelves thinks it wont work well because the stones are uneven
uneven. Do you have a close-up of the shelves meeting the stone of the fireplace?
applying the stone to the cement board. There is no stone behind the actual shelf, just cleating that is attached directly to studs. The faux stone veneer
able to get a seamless look. I don't know if this would work with real stone, as its weight might not be able to be supported on top of the cleating.
