A deck and patio can work very well together, especially on a sloping site, or when you want to make a graceful transition between inside and outside with a few feet of height between the two
to the patio allows for that gradual transition.
Instead of stairs that go straight down to a patio or garden, a small deck provides a transitional space between a house's architecture and the yard. Leave enough room for an Adirondack chair or two so that you can lounge a few feet above the rest of

of the stone you used in this home? I am looking for a light color flagstone (somewhat close to limestone) but want to also have some brown veins or crème to it so it doesn't look too stark. We are building our patio and there are two very large oak trees that provide nice shade. Any suggestions? Thank

Banish weeds. If you have a loose flagstone patio, do weed control between the stones. Pull weeds up by the roots or douse them with boiling water. If you have loose gravel between stones, clean it up and put the renegades

Live the reused old stone.... Less formal placement
This designer chose a bond pattern as well, but the pavers are regionally salvaged granite set more loosely than above. The looser joints allow for plantings between the stone, for a more rustic setting.

Where the patio meets the house
Did you use some sort of concrete step-up border here to help the transition between the patio and the base of the house, or is that a flat border with two different shades of rock? Hard to tell from the picture. Thank you!
