That's a great looking kitchen. They could be 3/4" honed absolute black granite, or they could even be a solid surface material...Corian has one in charcoal gray called Medea that's really fabulous.

it's an opinion, but it's the only man made surface I use. Very clean looking.
We are working on a similar project for a customer with Silestone White Zeus quartz for all surfaces including the "waterfall" from countertop to floor. Love this one too, great example of this modern look.
