Can you please tell me what the tapered part of the column is made of? thanks so much

The columns are made of MDO. It is a plywood product made to be used outdoors. It is 1/2" thick and comes in a 4x8 sheet.
The porch columns are Sherwin Williams English Ivy and the porch siding is a custom mix.
I am in Ohio and the rain chains in the picture freeze up all the time in the winter. It is actually pretty neat to see them turn into columns of ice. They have been up for 8 years and I have never had a problem with them.

These columns are trimmed out w/ hardipanel
The columns are field constructed over 24" square stone bases. The top of the column is 10" square tapering to 20" at the base. Thanks for asking!
The stone used for the column bases is Carderock locally available in MD & VA. The porch floor and column caps is PA flagstone. Thanks
