I would like to do tile on my risers. Do I need to build out my stair treads so there is enough space or can I simply tile over existing stairs?

here are the risers I had done

I like the idea of the tile, but I would never put carpet on stairs.... it wears very quickly and often looks dirty and requires a lot of upkeep. I love the dark tread of this picture with the tile.

What is the name of the tile used on the stairs?
I too have searched everywhere for this tile. I thought it was brown but it has a blend of tones in there. I think I found it. It's a "jewel size glass tile" and this particular shade is - "Jerusalem Aura Metallic Glass" http://www.mosaictilesupplies.com/ProductImages/aura/R061mesh.300.jpg

You could also put a stair tred of carpet on top of each step which would not hide the pretty tile work

Check to see if there is a local tile store that carries these Latin Accents tiles. They should be able to put you in contact with a good installer for them.
Love the mix of patterned tiles, against the white.

Here's one more great example of a tiled application. This would have been great for preventing the scuff marks that elves magically left on the risers of our steps when I had a teenage boy bounding up and down them.
