Is there a transition strip between the tile and hardwood or does the tile just butt up against the hardwood?

you transition from tile to laminate flooring (or any other "floating" type wood floor), then you will have to use a T-mold or similar applied transition strip. However, if you instead use a glue-down or nail-down wood (engineered is available this way also) then you can create a flush transition instead
