What was used to support the treads?
I see some type of plate for supporting the treads, but was wondering if this is a custom built plate or can this be purchased already made? Great staircase by the way!
What finish was used on the glulam treads?
there a place that can reproduce this tread hanger? Is it in Wisconsin?
Tim, Check with your residential code on your maximum space between railings and open treads. Here in Wisconsin, that dim is 4". So if you have a 7-1/2" rise, you would have to have treads a minimum of 3-1/2" thick, unless of
of course you put some sort of toe kick or lip on the back of the tread to reduce the open space between treads. We used 3-1/2" thick glue lam timbers for our treads on this stair for that very reason. Good luck with your house. Jim

reveals b/w treads and risers; stair disappears behind walls
And then there's the mother of all reveal details. This is the reveal that's created between the treads and risers of a stair that gives the illusion that the stair disappears behind the walls. As with other reveals, this requires an extra layer of drywall and some precise craftsmanship.
expression, while apparently simple, is actually the result of a lot of careful construction work. Creating the reveals at the wall intersection of the treads and risers is a time-consuming detail, but the effect is that the stair appears to hover in space. An understated and utilitarian look, simple white

Where did you find that stair tread detail?
decorative but performs an important function. On the side of the stringer, below the tread, are carved tread brackets. Though they look like they're holding up the treads, they are applied moldings. If your stairs do not have tread brackets and you want to add some flair, gluing or nailing on brackets is a good

I have white oak prefinished floors - southern yellow pine stair treads (not finished) and oak railings (not finished). what do you suggest for stain or painting of the treads and the railings? You can't really match
I've found that in homes with nice molding and ornamentation a simple black and white look works well to compliment these features. Painting the treads and rail black you could have a great look, depending on the feel of the rest of your home. Good luck.

"Tread" lightly. This is definitely not a staircase for anyone even remotely afraid of heights. Glass treads, glass handrail almost completely disappear these floating stairs. The use of minimal materials in a rather complicated form make for an interesting architectural feature.
reveal everything from below.Note that glass treads require a surface treatment to create friction and prevent slipping. These treatments feature a type of wearing surface that can enhance the overall design, such as the three lines near the nosing of each tread in this photo.
