yes they did. You can't see it very well in this picture but there is a vaulted ceiling coming down on the arch over the island. so those are structural posts

so good with flexability, so the idea is that you want to keep the stone from flexing, especially if somebody decides to stand on the granite and change the light bulbs that are above the island. We (Custom Stone Interiors, Inc) typically recommend sometype of support as described above or we use 1/2"
