I'm not sure about the placement of the black metal screen in front of the kitchen peninsula. Why is it there? Seems to box off the kitchen and make access to the peninsula impossible.

Another cost saving idea, as oldblackdog inferred, upper floors are cheaper than building bigger on the first floor but may increase the cost of the foundation a bit. However, if you've chosen a cube rather than a rectangle you've already saved a ton of cash and can easily afford the additional foundation requirements.

@ Salmon Falls Architecture and stilllearning1, generally a grout joint of less than 1/8" gets unsanded grout and over 1/8" gets sanded grout, so it depends on how you set your pennies in the thinset (I'm assuming you're talking about real pennies?)

I wouldn't choose that photo personally, but "the artwork has personal meaning" for the homeowner. Maybe it reminds him of a great party or was a gift from a dear friend; who knows? What I like about this space is that it is a contrast to much of the other content on Houzz and that it has a personal touch, however strange it might be to some.

Some of the shots of the outside of this house make it look too large and looming, giving it an institutional vibe. I like the concept but do not love it. A bit too impersonal for me. The way the light plays indoors and the views from the inside towards the landscape are what are attracting me to this design and I don't know if that could be achieved without the exterior being as such. I have a love / hate relationship with the whole thing.

cordybrown and others who want to buy a barn: if you are a do-it-yourself kind of family and cultivate contacts in the country, you can find yourself a barn for a thousand dollars cash and you will have all the beautiful virgin lumber you need. Craig's List and Ebay are some places to start. It's where I did my research, before I decided to sell.

It's a lot of work to take down a barn and you may want to have someone on your team who is familiar with construction processes. You'll need a lot of muscle and brawn to handle big pieces that weigh hundreds of pounds, a cherry picker to remove the roof and get to the rafters, a lot of nails to be removed on site before the wood is loaded for hauling, a big rig to haul the lumber, a place to store the lumber out of the weather until you need it, some sort of numbering system to know what sizes and kinds of lumber you have and exactly where it is in the stored stacks. Require a tetanus shot for everyone working on the project. Take the barn down in the winter. And watch out for snakes and other resident wildlife. And be sure there is a road to haul out your treasures from the deconstruction site. And of course, lots of photos of the wood and pieces you especially like and ways to keep track of where they are stored.

I am quite serious - this is what the buyer of my barn did - and that's just skimming the surface. But my point is this: it can be done and you can have your dream home with the lumber you salvage. Sweat equity.

My first impression was that your garage was too square, so I love the picture Pamela Bateman posted with the curved top garage doors & trim. Can you add some of the roof support/beam looking things (sorry don't know what they're called) under the eaves like in Madson Design's cabin drawing above? Also if you can make the roof line of the portico & dormer a little more droopy/curvy like the curved roof on the corner?

I also love the hanging roses & a nice picket fence would be beautiful! Make sure the walk to the front door has some curve to it & its made from different sized stones & lined with flowers. And by all means add a garden gate, arch, or arbor with hanging vines.
