Holli Williamson Yes, my experience from not cleaning them well is that the grease and oil get gummy on the sandpaper so I was always changing the sandpaper and that took longer.

Sheryll Lyn I just tried this and it does NOT work. I have a very strong magnet too!

Five Twenty Two Industries Sheryl Lyn: We have been doing this for just about 20 years and have found this to be the most reliable way of finding studs... How are your walls constructed? drywall on wood studs? plaster and lathe? You need to move the magnet around all over the wall try to cover as much wall space as you can with the it if your wall is drywall with studs you WILL find a stud... on plaster and lathe you should go pretty slow..as the nails they used would have been very small to keep from cracking the lathe. If it is an older wall you may actually be able to see the bulges of the studs if you look down the wall... then you will probably need to either try the magnet or use a drill with a very small bit and make a series of holes until you find the stud. The are generally 16" o.c. older homes the studs are farther apart. If you find one you can generally use a tape measure and drill and find the rest... you'll just need some wall patch....and paint. Happy hunting..

olldroo What sort of walls are they? What has caused the lumps and bumps? Unfortunately, gloss paint does shows imperfections.

hammerhugger I wonder if Hairbyhosie has what they call "Knockdown walls". It looks like there were highs in the plaster and when wet are smoothed to a point, leaving a type of texture. This is hard to explain unless you can see it.

inbelmont My husband left a plastic portfolio on our buffet. In just the right light or angle has left a "ghost" shadow. I have tried furniture polish but it doesn't work. Any suggestions? The buffet is "old style" and very shiny or glossy on top, but that's a whole other question!
