I live in the mid-Atlantic, so not as cold as Vancouver and I have a much smaller house, but with a wall of windows in the living area and floor-to-ceiling smaller windows in other rooms. The wall of windows faces southeast, so that room is always warmer in the winter than the other rooms. I think when you site and plan it correctly, window walls can help with heating instead of hurt. My house also has deep eaves to help bring in less light during the summer and more during the winter. The heating and cooling bills have been very reasonable.

@rerdle - here are a few exterior views of the long houses that are on my boards currently...two are dogtrot variants and one has a separate studio/guest wing addition. Plans are available on my site: http://thirtybyforty.com/plan-packages/
Good luck...!

As an avid organic city gardener I enjoyed your article. Maybe I will seriously think adding bee keeping to my list of gardening activities.

kelcarney: re: stair runner. Check out Altas Rugs, "Cabana". It is commercial grade, so may or may not suit your needs. I have been searching for a runner as well and think I will use it in my home.
