    Mary Kozma Good read...
a good sofa to me, supports my back and arms in a way that is good for relaxing and sitting long enough for a good movie, or a great conversation. I own well made pieces that I intend to reupholster now that we have moved into a different house and the old fabric is looking faded. My sofas fit through the doors easily and have a heavier weight to them so they stay put when someone 'plops' onto them. I like winged back styles because they support my Thoracic and head when relaxing. People need to sit in a sofa for a little while when searching through showrooms. Just sit quietly and pay attention to how the sofa fits YOU. First function... then make pretty by picking your fabric.

I also do not think the extra space used to make the sofa back deeper or the arms with extra rolls adds to comfort and can use up excessive space that does not get used for comfort. Of course when needing a design that fills a huge room, that is another matter that gets considered on the design end.
