Ugly ceiling fan tip: paint the blades, or even the whole fan, to match the ceiling and the fan becomes much less noticeable. I will be trying several of the tips from the comments section. I would be interested to know exactly how people use the frozen packs when going to sleep.

ptmatthews: I wrap a freezer pack in a pillowcase, and stick it down by my feet. I guess like in the olden days when they used bedwarmers from the fire to warm themselves. cooling your feet or hands is one of the best ways to cool down quickly (although I do know a trick with an ice-cube- but that's for another forum) ;)

Chicago Mosaics, I really love the leaves, they are sooooooo fun. Hide em in the bathroom? Is there a line at the bathroom door? I'd rather gather and share them on the porch. Just happen to live in Wisconsin so I can relate to the trees.

Another classic design style. Clawfoot tub? How about a vintage modern casting based on an 1880 French design? or taking Farmhouse all the way to Barn Retreat.

We have radiant heated concrete floors with 2 dogs and a cat in California. We have now lived here over a year, with a string of really hot and really cold days. My Gpa has threatened to move into our place (they live in the big house on the property, we live in 480sq feet, but after days of 100 degree weather, it topped out at 72 inside with just a fan on). The only draw back I find is that I tend to wear my 'house slippers' because it can be cold (I don't like to waste electricity, our floor is set at 62 degrees) and hard in the winter, but I have not once regretted the decision that I made on the floors.

i am trying to pick how dark my tint should be. I have a western exposure and a lot of glass, so I originally thought I should get the darkest-15 Night Vision by 3M. But as I look at the sample, my landscaping looks so much better through the 25. the dealer tells me that the damage blocking between the two is not that significant and to choose the one I like the most. I am concerned that it will be like most things I have done-when making the moderate choice I always wish later that I had done more. Any thoughts?

Deirdre - why don't you pay to install one of each side by side on two windows. Sit on it a few days.

I agree the heat savings is not that significant, and would personally go for the slightly less heat blockage but have the view you will enjoy the most.

This is a beautiful renovation.

We bought a house where the entire downstairs -- and the garage space -- were an apartment. Converting it back was, luckily, not too difficult. I wouldn't want to give up my inside, warm garage space during the winter, but I totally love what this family did. Good for them!

There's a vaguely hacienda-like look to the overhang and patio coupled with the French doors that is SO inviting - such a difference from the plain Jane "before." The interior is warm and welcoming and a lot more pleasing to survey then the contents of the old garage space! I'd hazard a guess that on 17 acres, a home was found/made/or already present for the garage's contents.

At the end of the project, I bet these folks wondered why they waited so long to do this really wonderful renovation!
