I love it too; I love mid century modern and even 70's style split levels. I increasingly like modern in general, because of its brightness and clean lines. But what if this house were not at the beach but in the mountains? I'm looking at an 80's modern house which would be easy to remodel if it were at the beach, but instead it's in the mountains. I'm looking for ways to modernize and mountainize it without trying to make it something it's not.

For example, the whole house has whitewashed ceilings (many of them 2+ stories high) and I was told $45k to un-whitewash them. So I've looked at some examples of Scandinavian modern here in Houzz, and other homes that keep the whitewash ceiling while adding darker woods on the floors. Some have said it looks like European mountain style.

The remodel is going to be super expensive, just replacing the 30 year old windows will be at least $150k. And I can probably build from scratch for less, although building would probably have cost overruns too, and there aren't any good lots for sale currently. I feel that I need to learn more about 80's modern architecture and then I will accept this more for what it is. Any thoughts about this style?

Not for nothin' everybody, but here's the dictionary definition of cottage:

cottage |ˈkätij|
noun
a small simple house, typically one near a lake or beach.
• a dwelling forming part of a farm establishment, used by a worker: farm cottages.

I just can't call a 2000 square foot house a cottage. Those of you who are fortunate enough to be able to afford a dwelling by a lake or beach can, of course, call said dwelling whatever you please. ::-} However, on a site dedicated to all things house and yard, accuracy is valuable and a "cottage" is not a 2,000 square foot dwelling. You wouldn't call a small city backyard a farm just because the people plant vegetables, right?

Not only would you wear the hair rollers to the store, you had to sleep on those rollers every night. Those rollers were large and made of hard plastic. In order to get the most lift to your hair you would use rinsed out frozen orange juice cans instead of store bought rollers. In the morning you would back-comb the devil out of your hair, comb the top layer smooth then use tons of AquaNet on it. It is "Saturday Night Live" worthy now but was "deadly" serious back in the sixties.

Over priced and over done. Wall art is ridiculously over priced. Who ever would pay the amount asked for those pieces has more dollars than sense.

For those complaining about the de-Tudorization of this home, please give it a rest! the only real Tudors are in England. This was built in the 20th century in the style of a Tudor. It was a dark and cramped and now it is lovely and light and open. Props to the owners for not doing a tear down and building a looming monster!

Regarding before photos, I feel lucky when the pros have any photos to share and simply upload what they give me. No one is trying to pull the wool over anyone's eyes, we are just sharing what we've got. Often they are ripped from the old real estate listing or a client's personal photos. At best someone barely remembers to be take them moments before demolition begins. I appreciate John DeForest digging these up to show the us the differences.

As a side note, back in the Stone Age when I was in architecture school, we had one digital camera for the entire population to share (it was a recent invention and cost thousands of dollars), and a scanner or two in the entire building, so we used this weird stuff called film and had it developed. I would often opt for black and white film for site studies - it was more expensive, but seeing things rendered in black and white always allowed me to see patterns, lines and spaces that color distracted me from seeing. Most of the site studies I pinned to the wall when presenting my projects were in black and white, whether they were prints or cheap black and white blow ups from the copy machine. It was also easier to draw right on top of the black and white when coming up with design ideas - like mapping flow and systems with colored lines to better understand the site.

Shakuff, the light fixture does draw the eye upward.
We have a fancy chandelier in our entry that I liked, but it certainly doesn't do the same. Our beautiful high ceilings could do with some highlighting.

Our entry is not finished. On one side is our early 19th century trimeau (mirror surrounded/topped by a painting) and the other is a low bench with great frame and zebra fabric. But it doesn't have enough presence yet.
Would love to add that pond in front. Sigh...

The homeowner is clearly talented in bringing her design ideas to an old home for a modern family. Kudos to her for her vision.

I love old homes and this one has a great new family who will take care of it. Preserving the good parts, updating the parts no modern family could tolerate and giving it such gorgeous interior design is what we wish for ALL old houses. They are our heritage and this family respected that while making it their own.

This is a beautiful renovation.

We bought a house where the entire downstairs -- and the garage space -- were an apartment. Converting it back was, luckily, not too difficult. I wouldn't want to give up my inside, warm garage space during the winter, but I totally love what this family did. Good for them!

There's a vaguely hacienda-like look to the overhang and patio coupled with the French doors that is SO inviting - such a difference from the plain Jane "before." The interior is warm and welcoming and a lot more pleasing to survey then the contents of the old garage space! I'd hazard a guess that on 17 acres, a home was found/made/or already present for the garage's contents.

At the end of the project, I bet these folks wondered why they waited so long to do this really wonderful renovation!

gwnorth i agree totally. I absolutely accept the staging aspect and have no issues with clearing out the clutter, adding flowers and fruit etc to make it look as lovely as possible for photographs. My point was more about actual furniture selection and the problems with loving the look of something conflicting with the usability of the piece. The bedside tables are a great example. I have a very high antique bed and have struggled to find bedside tables that were tall enough. While I currently wait for one I have on order i am using essentially the exact same table in these photos. Between the lamp, my kindle, laptop, tissue box, readers, cell phone/clock, earplugs, water etc there is no way this table could ever be a practical choice for me. Could it be for her? Hard to believe it could be even if she only needs half as much stuff at her fingertips.
