Our home was set up with a security system when we built the house 20 years ago, but we never used it. Then we decided to have it activated to an outside company a couple of years ago. We were on the road a lot since we retired and live on a river green belt and decided there was a definite risk. We were on a trip only a couple of months later and got a call that our system had triggered an alarm and that the police had been called! Five police cars and police dog were at the scene and my daughter let them in the house. A couple of windows had been damaged but no one got in because of the loud alarm! The police met a stranger coming back in our backyard. He had hid his bike down by the river. Needless to say he was eventually convicted of attempted burglary! We were hooked and definitely believe in an alarm system, especially if your home is in an area like ours!

I like the look. It adds texture and allows light, but its not very practical in an area where window dressing becomes insulation in the winter. I have summer windows and winter window. The winter curtains are heavy velvet, and/or lined. When things warm up, they are switched out for sheers and light cotton. Half of them were found at re-sale shops. The fun is in the hunt and knowing I spend a fraction of what they cost the original owners.

I could go for a small one in a mountain setting. Would needs lots of colorful rugs/quilts/throws and good natural light to make through the winters.

Paint it! , bricks here are the standard in all constructions, I hate it!, here they are so common, everything is bricks, bricks (good anti seismic material, but ugly in my opinion), half of this house have brick walls and all are painted, and we are thinking in actually cover the bricks with something flat, they always get dirty, catch all the dust, I have mentioned that I hate it?, lol

Of course I prefer the real flowers like most of you do, however, we have 4 cats and a couple dogs who love the greenery and can't resist the tasty, eye-catching flowers. Cats go where ever they want. There is no such thing as putting it up high and out of their jumping range. lol So it's silk for this household. As stated above, high quality silk can look like the real flowers and plants. I have a lovely pink rose that belonged to my mother-in-law, for I'm not sure how many years. But I do know for sure it's been at least 24 years. Since her passing I've had it in our home and it still looks real, as if it came from a florist! I still get compliments on it. So I have no problem going outdoors to smell my flowers and enjoy them, and indoors I enjoy the silk ones.

I love both red and green, dried eucalyptus. I also love artificial berry vines and dried flowers. They do get dusty and are hard to clean, however.I also have live plants in the house. They clean the air and give a natural element to the room. Fresh cut flowers/evergreens will always be a favorite, no matter the season.

When I was a pasteup artist we had adjustable tables and that was great, especially with cutting and pasting and deadlines. However, now that all the work is done on a computer, I couldn't see the benefit of using one.
