Enjoyed all the comments here and the great idea book. I love china and mix and match a lot. I have only a few of some things and lots of fruit bowls, for example. I am always looking for ways to mix what I have for the number of people I am expecting. I too find the table setting process very enjoyable and get my rewards when friends and family have a wonderful time setting around it. A cousin of mine once told me that a beautiful table setting, including the center piece items, will make up for less than gourmet food. Just serve it well!

I also like to use vintage items for a new purpose on the table. I use small paper napkins under bowls and plates to keep them from moving while adding more color and interest and still using a cloth napkin in the usual way. I might use an egg cup or shot glass for sauce or a desert topping and I've used small ash trays for dessert bowls like the clover leaf one below on a demitasse cup saucer. I like to use plain contemporary pieces mixed with vintage or antique. And sometimes I use to two full sets of china and mix up the plates, bowls… so two place setting beside each other are opposites. Below are some pieces I've put together.

Things always cost more than you think. Changing your mind costs.

Agree with the comment re planning ahead for what you cannot afford now. When we built. we thought that we might like a spa pool one day. There was no room in the budget for that but we did pay $90 for an exterior electrical socket so that we can easily go ahead if we are in that position (i.e. paid off the mortgage). Factoring in the cost of interest on top of the purchase price of a spa pool could almost double the price over the long term. Maybe I am stingy.

On the other hand, there are some things that I had to have done at the time of building, like the landscaping, as last time we waited 12 years and 3 days for a proper driveway before the earthquake ruined the land (lateral spreading and liquefaction). Though my husband thought that was a plus as he looked out over our yard as soon as the sun came up!

Honestly, I think it's just semantics...an attempt to transition one phrase into the other. After reading the houzz article describing 'work zones', it could just as easily describe my 'work triangle' kitchen. I Dishwasher & trash next to sink, check. Landing areas next to major appliances: check. Large island to keep guests a bay: check.....

I live in a small town filled with older homes. I know few people who upgrade their kitchens to look like the glam-fabulous photos here on houzz. Most people I know don't ever get around to kitchen remodeling and just make do with the old.

Another thing: I read that kitchens have come a long way because all the architects used to be all men and they seldom spent time in a kitchen, therefore kitchens weren't 'user friendly'. Once women came on to the scene, their input helped kitchens evolve into rooms that function well and are family gathering places.

I don't have time to read all the other comments, so maybe someone has already said this, but I think it's a good idea to have the sink and the cooktop/range on the same run of cabinets, so that they are not separated by a walkway. This makes prep and cleanup easier and safer, since no one can walk between the chef and the sink while the chef is trying to drain pasta.

I love them all. I have remodeled 3 homes in my lifetime and the first thing I do with the kitchens is make them all white. Nothing says clean to me like a white kitchen. I am a clean person so keeping a white kitchen clean is easy. Dark kitchen especially around my food does not remind me of clean food. Where you prepare your food should be clean and clinical.

My first impression was that your garage was too square, so I love the picture Pamela Bateman posted with the curved top garage doors & trim. Can you add some of the roof support/beam looking things (sorry don't know what they're called) under the eaves like in Madson Design's cabin drawing above? Also if you can make the roof line of the portico & dormer a little more droopy/curvy like the curved roof on the corner?

I also love the hanging roses & a nice picket fence would be beautiful! Make sure the walk to the front door has some curve to it & its made from different sized stones & lined with flowers. And by all means add a garden gate, arch, or arbor with hanging vines.

Came across this today while browsing at HGTV Gardens site. For those whose pocketbook is smaller than their home/garden dreams (like me!), maybe a little hobbit hole (add trees, vines, ferns), below. The blurb says suitable for sleepovers, tho' maybe just little kids:
"Wooden Wonders’ hobbit holes turn backyards into whimsical wonderlands. The brand-new playhouse version Woodshire, produced in Unity, Maine, is an enclosed space ideal for summer sleepovers and imagination-filled play dates, from $2,390 at www.wooden-wonders.com

Just because a person doesn't want to spend $2,500 - $5,000 for a coffee table, doesn't mean that those who do not, end up with a "common, and cheap centerpiece". There are thousands of "art piece" type coffee tables that cost in the hundreds, not the thousands. And for the record, I like the mosaic or black coffee tables best. How much do they cost?

I agree 100 % you don't have to spend thousands to enjoy a beautiful and unique center piece.
The furniture store in Los Angeles had a ton of amazing and unique choices. They did give me a discount down to $2240 for the iron rivet table, $688 for the white wash teak round, $1760 for the mosaic tile round table with iron base and $1440 for the antique Indian storage trunk table.
I also love this piece and best price...$540 reclaimed wood and iron strap base.

The company that makes the marine quality paint that was used to cover my laminate cabinets is AWL.
the stuff is amazing if applied properly and that means sprayed on in shop and on site where uprights etc. can't be removed. I don't know what prep was used (probably some serious sanding?) but the final result is an incredible euro looking, tough as nails lacquer finish. Stands to reason as this product is used to paint yachts. AKZO NOBEL....North American supplier: East Water St. Waukegan Illinois 60085 TEL: 847-599-6212, FAX: 847-599-6209 Australia: Unit E54 Gold Coast City Marina 76 Waterway Dr. Coomera Queensland 4209 Australia. TEL: 32.14.25.7770 FAX: 32.14.23.0880. this is not something that you can just paint on but if you have the money to invest in getting someone to do a do a proper job you will NOT be disappointed in the final product. My laminate cabinets went from dark brown to off white and they're virtually perfect.
