I love solar lights. But I do agree with many folks that they don't last very long. If it is just the batteries, that is easy to replace, but what has happened on a few of mine is the light sensor goes bad, having the lights turn on all day, and thus are very dim and short-lived at night. Almost all of my lights have been Hampton Bay through Home Depot, and the newer lights seem to have fixed the dead light sensors. I find the more expensive wall wash and floods (around $50) are the brightest, and now my favorite. Here's a pic of our backyard after dark. Every light here is solar.

Solar lights have so many benefits, they not only help reduce the electricity bills but are also good for the health as well because all the other lights cast some bad effects on the health. Moreover, solar lights can be managed easily as compared to the kerosene lamps.

I have been looking for some OUTDOOR barstools for a while now and having trouble. The BBQ island top sits at 39" with the bottom of the tile edge at 36". An awkward height combined with exposure to the elements. I imagine adjustable height seat mechanisms having a very short life here in AZ sun. And why do these seats cost so dang much? I think for now I will just take my kitchen bar chairs outside when the occasion calls for seating.

Dura Supreme - stop showing off (esp pic 1)! Every time I see that pic, I so want to incorporate pieces somewhere in my house. It's too bad you're so far from FL

I love my cute little powder room in the library (gets almost no use). It's dark and rich and shimmery and very elegant.
One of my favorite Houzz pics is from 'Ann Aacks tile bathroom - Velvet & Linen' I love how the picture in that powder room brings it to a different level.

As for floor length mirrors in powder rooms (I guess to increase visual size), my very stylish friend has a powder room with one - behind the toilet. Now, for me as a woman, not so bad, but it makes me think every time of how uncomfortable I would be if I was a guy and watching myself pee - in full defined, living color. I imagine it was there when she moved in.

John David Edison here is a pat on the back, great job. Matarozzi Pelsinger, my favorite for color and texture, thank you for sharing. Buckingham interior I love the tile. LuAnn Development the color and texture are great and I like the fun idea of the disco-ball light, I think I would giggle everytime I saw it. Daher Interior design that carbon-gray grass cloth is beautiful, but not in the bathroom. Fads come and go and some should not be reborn again; like gold & brass fixtures, at best they look cheap. Lets just stick to silver or maybe come out with colored ones like red, black, blue, green, orange, pink..... I don't like the dark colors; however, the plus is that noone will be tying the room up putting on or adjusting their make-up cause they won't be able to see themselves. Maybe the dark ones are for men only; but how would they read in there? Hmmmmm

trish655, LOVE the idea of wrapping, especially the WELCOME and GOODBYE touch...and would love to see some pics :o)

Reading your post made me think of what an interior decorator friend of mine suggested to us to use in place of black paint...the black netting that you put down in flower beds to keep the weeds from growing through...and possibly adding lights [the non-heating kind] between it and the actual ceiling. We ended up painting our ceiling a flat black, which looked fantastic btw, but I never forgot about the netting/lights idea.

I don't have any pictures of that old basement apartment with my wrapping paper ceiling, Becky, sorry. Back then cameras were 35mm at best and no one really showed off their ingenuity like they do now, but if I had tiles here, I would do it all over again. Blue sky and white clouds in a nursery, Disney Princess for a little girls room like a checkerboard mixed with some glam paper of glittery purses and lipsticks. Or just put those hieroglyphic stickers on white and pink papers. Black and red checkerboard for a game room and I could go on forever The possibilities are endless with these things. Love the lights idea, those LED lights would look like stars!

Building a new home. Incorporating many of these ideas. I'm most excited about the pantry. Biggest one I've seen in a modest two story house. Designed the home ourselves. Huge mud room/laundry room at the side entrance, laundry shute, bathroom close by. We had to create our own design, because farmhouse plans, did not mesh with our farm.

Honestly, I think it's just semantics...an attempt to transition one phrase into the other. After reading the houzz article describing 'work zones', it could just as easily describe my 'work triangle' kitchen. I Dishwasher & trash next to sink, check. Landing areas next to major appliances: check. Large island to keep guests a bay: check.....

I live in a small town filled with older homes. I know few people who upgrade their kitchens to look like the glam-fabulous photos here on houzz. Most people I know don't ever get around to kitchen remodeling and just make do with the old.

Another thing: I read that kitchens have come a long way because all the architects used to be all men and they seldom spent time in a kitchen, therefore kitchens weren't 'user friendly'. Once women came on to the scene, their input helped kitchens evolve into rooms that function well and are family gathering places.

I don't have time to read all the other comments, so maybe someone has already said this, but I think it's a good idea to have the sink and the cooktop/range on the same run of cabinets, so that they are not separated by a walkway. This makes prep and cleanup easier and safer, since no one can walk between the chef and the sink while the chef is trying to drain pasta.
