Although our new house (not pictures above in thread) is not on the water (although it is on a pond) I couldn't help decorating one room in a coastal style. Before it was dark. Now it's crisp and clean. I miss living on the water!

We are moving house from nearly on the water to about 4 ks from it, (though have a pool) on the Sunny Queensland Gold Coast.(Australia) Its all about beach up there, and the house has just had laid, blue carpet, which is about the same color as our police cars! Yeek, but it is top quality carpet, soooooooooo, thinking some rugs to tone it down, and add a little paprika color in cushions to the white couches to tone down the blue, and once the Queensland summer hits perhaps some teal blue and gelato colors to add to the mix, (put away the paprika) without going overboard. Any ideas Girls?

Nice mosaic behind the stove in the 3rd photo. We didn't do it but Chicago Mosaics could do something similar....and what an inspired choice instead of subway tile.

@Lida Horaitou, I think that will be all right. 55cm is about 21". American standards place the upper cupboard about 18" plus above the countertop.

Silvo, I agree with the stove top in the island. One of my houses in the past that I designed and had built had such an island. The builder balked but I insisted and was so glad! I loved it. Had a pop up vent to the outside so no vent hood to deal with. It was just perfect. Friends could sit on the bar stools across from me while I cooked. Wish i still lived there.

Quick note about dishwashers for empty nesters. When we added a kitchen/great room to our home, I specified 2 full size dishwashers. (I've read a lot of bad stuff about the dual DWs) Sometimes I need to let the dishes sit for 2 days before it's full and my Kitcheaid does a great job. I also have 2 full size sinks and ( a double and a large single). I also have a full size range and an extra full size oven in the island. I cook every day. I use a lot of pots and pans and my slowcooker. I freeze and can. I am thinking of having a pot- filler installed over the stove. When the kids come or we have company, I am so glad for the extras....and I've been told, it will really help with resale ----- a long time down the road.

We've got Silestone (Lagoon pattern) in the kitchen and the bathrooms (Yukon Blanco). It's been great, resists all sort of stains (red wine, berries, fruits, etc). Well worth it.

As for Corian, the boat has it in the bathroom. We used a neoprene ring around a shampoo bottle. Apparently a bit of water collected under the ring for a few days. The Corian puckered and swelled under it as a result.

Quartz (aka Silestone/Caesarstone) is fabulous and comes in a wide variety of patterns and colors. I had a deep warm gray counter in my last kitchen and loved it. One day a workman left his cordless drill sitting on the counter and it left what appeared to be a bleach mark. My contractor came out with a can of acetone and wiped down the area and the spot magically disappeared. After that, I kept a can of acetone on hand for future use. I'm preparing to remodel the kitchen in a new home and I'm not considering any other countertop.
