I do have a concern how huge some houses are. In my job I home visit new parents, I was in an estate area as the home visitor nurse for 8 years, it actually had a devastating effect on my own health. Seeing young families with enormous houses, 4 wheel drives in the garage, and saying to me I have to go back to work when baby three months, crying, increasing rates of depression as families drowned in debt. It made really sad. I was then transferred at my request to a different area, smaller 3 x 1, older homes, families doing them up as they can afford, less competitiveness amongst the mums, happier families, less depression. I was happier. It is a terrible legacy the materialism that I guess we all have created. I now have moved areas again into the poorest most in need community and seeing the disparity between our areas in my own small city it is a sad reflection on society but what the answer is I have no idea. Sorry I have had a bit of a debrief here.

It takes both courage and soul searching to come to terms with what is important in your life. This article is so profound! I am looking at my home and seeing all the burdens it brings. I have advanced rheumatoid arthritis and have been forced to retire. I can really see living the way she does. What a freeing experience! Thank you so much for sharing her and her story with us Houzzers.

Carl, there are lots of wonderful photos of the family throughout the house, but as the photographer, I like to preserve some of the home owner's privacy in these very public forums.

uncannyannie, the coffee table was procured at Uncommon Objects and is not from the fallen tree. That would be so cool, though, wouldn't it?

Finally a modern home that isn't about squares, rectangles and straight lines. The curved and organic shapes are stunning and sensuous in a way that boxy architecture could never be. Bold? Sure. Cold? No way! This place is too much in harmony with its natural surroundings to be cold or attention seeking. It is a thing of beauty.

Once in a great while I see a home that is so unique and inspired it takes my breath away. This home did that. To say it's cold? I find it's warm wood and inside out fluidity extremely warm. The imagination and artistry is amazing!

Tried for years to have children, expensive medical bills, no responses from adoption agencies. Bought a very attractive white sofa. That did the trick -- two little boys in less than one year.

I love to see a young man thinking about - and crafting - his space. I'm dismayed to see some of the comments here. Who is anyone to question whether someone wants to have his stuff out in the open? I just moved into my own post-divorce home and all I do is think about how I want my space to look. I wish I had this man's skills (and I wouldn't care if it looks like a four year old built things either). But, honestly, I would be terrified to put anything I did myself on Houzz - the comments are so disheartening sometimes.

I just think it's lovely that four young housemates are using chalkboard backsplashes, entertaining in a sunroom, and aren't just throwing their possessions into cardboard boxes.

And not to brag (ok, maybe a little), but here is one of two perfectly matched bedside tables my husband and his grandfather made in the shop together as my wedding gift.
