I have used barn doors in several projects and never had an issue with closing an opening the door frequently. In fact the hardware I use is for commercial applications and is specifically designed for heavy weight and use. In my project suburban home remodel, the barn door is for a bedroom and there have been no issues. A bigger concern is that you purchase the hardware for the floor that prevents the door from being pushed off the track by an overzealous child.

I would hang the door on the living room side so you can enjoy the view of the track , which is the cool part of a barn door. Unless there is not enough wall space.
