Thank you for the feedback. I hope the fresh coat of paint and the new countertops being installed will make us appreciate the cabinets more. I will have to post a before and after when complete.

The tough part is the lights are brand new, so is the paint. Previous owners updated. Feels like a bit of a waste to redo things, but they don't fit our taste.

If you donate the new light or sell it, someone will appreciate it. Put the new light closer to the ceiling, make sure it puts out more lumens with its appropriate bulbs that the current light.

The red paint will take some primer. Sometimes sellers try to accent a room with paint that is not neutral just to make an impact. Or sometimes they just have very personal taste. These are easy changes for now.

Add gray rugs, towels, canisters, whatever for now. In a few years the gray trend may be tired, so enjoy gray with easy to change accessories now. There could be a warm gray paint that would coordinate with the cabinet finish, too. Bring some paint samples home and take a look.

This is the main floor. The basement is similar with a smaller fireplace and bar. Again very plain, and the same gold color. We really like earth tones, cream, grey and dark brown. The more modern stairs in an interesting idea. I like the thought of painting the built-ins as well. I added a few things to the ideabook. Thanks!

you can just paint and stain the rails...leave that money for the new lighting you will need! and build up the banisters.square them off.

You've received some good advice. You said you would like "less involved" suggestions".

So, here is what I would advise to start. These ideas will be easier to implement, fairly inexpensive and also, give you an idea if you would like to take more expensive steps.

1) Paint the banister a dark color (dark charcoal or dark brown-black). You can also paint the spindles (personal choice)
2) Paint the mantle the same color.
3) Paint the walls. (Your ceilings should be painted the same color). I cannot give you a color without more info on your furniture, any other features in the house (countertop ), etc. Kitchen should be same color as family room.
4) Paint the niches an accent color
5) Replace can lights with led bulbs
6) Update light fixtures.
