Here's one of my versions of effectively using up the space on a 24' wide by 2 story tall great room. There's no need to make the fireplace the focal point here especially in Florida, but it is nevertheless an integral part of the design.

timglidden, my first thought was the right right on the same wall as the fireplace. That way you could use your current furniture arrangement for watching TV, just enjoying the fire, or both. Keeping it on the same wall helps to define the area, while putting the TV where the art work is might turn the entire open plan into a TV room. That's not such a bad thing -- it all depends on how you want to use the room, and how visible you want the TV to be. For more opinions, you might post this (with more pictures) in the Advice section. You'll get a lot of tips over there!

Another height idea for a shower is to have a rain shower (heaven) that has a bar connecting it to the wall on a sliding ring. In France, many showers have this as well as the Presidio in San Francisco. Sorry, no photo.
It was wonderful, as being short, I just moved the bar down to my height while my husband moved it up to its full height. The shower also had not only rain shower, but also traditional hand held shower. Nice to have all the options. When we move, we will have a walk-in (wheelchair roll in ) access with seat and rain shower and hand held...Comfort is the #1 issue in a good shower design.

This has instant appeal. Great work and good for the family. Would love to be able to implement a similar design in our Brownstone....Ugh!

Please Phillip Solomon, ...If you have a beautiful Brownstone, it deserves much better than this. It deserves a sense of history and melding of the old with the necessary upgrades. It should have bit of quirkiness, not the mundane. If you need an example, (only an example, not exact) please watch the modern version of the Sherlock Holmes tv show called, "Elementary" on CBS. The set decoration is superb, and has many interesting ideas to use in a Brownstone.

Thanks for a very informative article. We have a lovely front porch 8' x 20'. The siding on the house is a sort of light blue. I am toying with the idea of painting the front door orange as I've seen and loved on Houzz, instead of the more traditional black. The porch floor is T&G pressure-treated. How does one decide what colour to paint the floor?????

I like your remodeling shown in "Southern Charm in the California Wine Country." I would love to know what material the "barn red" roof is and who makes it. Thank you.

margaretdenten - thanks so much for reference to Eze-Breeze. I'm so excited - this product is exactly what we need for our screened in porch - didn't know it was available. Have written in for a quote.
