Denold, I'm zone 3 (Calgary, Alberta). There are lots of big leaved foliage plants that are fine here - ligularia are great for shade, I have a couple of angelica gigas plants that have HUGE leaves, many of the hostas, brunnera (already mentioned in this article) are great. Also you can sometimes pick up tropicals for good prices - I know HD and Rona sometimes mark them down - you can pick them up in the winter months and put them out in the summer. I have not a great deal of luck in bringing them inside in the fall but if they are cheap, I'm ok with that.

Thank you, mmers. We do have the hostas already. Shaded areas are hard to come by in our yard so I can't have too many as much as I would like to have more. Also, we don't like to have indoor plants and I imagine we would have to take some inside during the winter months. Currently, I have a thriving, beautiful coleus in a pot in our front porch. Come winter I will just have to throw it away.

Thanks! The decorative siding is made up of pre-primed clapboard shingles. The appearance is created by using staggered shingles for the majority of the wavy look and also scalloped shingles at the edges. This was custom designed by us at MGa and custom built by the master carpenters of This Old House.
