Last two house when I remodeled -- no Tub ... never miss it. Not doing one in the current rehab. Having done various niches in showers, I have found that that don't always add to the shower,,, I always do a small shelf. Unless you give the placement and tile layout a lot of thought they can look busy. The sixth photo shows a good layout -- although a bit much.

I saw a shower where the installer made a a niche out of withe corian and inserted it into the tile field -- sized so no tile had to be cut ... the one side extended to include the shower valve ... so from a distance it looked like a white rectangle in a field of dark gray
