Love the aubergine stools, I want! The living room is perfection. Not too impressed with the dining room, too much optical overload on the chair patterns and the painting needs to be modern or abstract to complement the living area IMHO. I do love the light fixture and chicken coop tho.

@jbke ..re the curtain rod -- it might be the light playing tricks. In the first photo, the camera was aiming right into the sunlight, I think.

I love a little black in a room as well. It can be really a small touch like the shades on a sconce.

Our last home had a huge master bath with plenty of light coming from 5 windows, on three sides. I wasn't at all afraid to paint our ceiling black. I loved it as did the visitors who toured on two different home showcase tours. We plan to build a modern farmhouse in the next few years and I intend to use black windows. I love black's versatility to swing from glam to modern.

I have always thought trying paint colours out in a room before you buy was crazy until our last house. We decided to repaint our family room which was surrounded by windows (my most loved room as the views were wonderful). I chose the paint colour by, as usual, paint chip cards. When we got the 3 gallons home and started to paint (it was a mellow green), it looked more like vomit on the walls. We submitted and went out and purchased, with paint chips again, a colour of "paprika". Another bad choice when it hit the walls. Because the room had so many windows and the lighting was more natural, the colours were nowhere near the paint chip. However I now had 4 gallons of paint. My hubby and I then threw caution to the wind and decided what about combining the paint colours-- what harm eh? We then painted samples of the first choice, second choice and combined choice ( turned out with surprise to be a wonderful yellow colour) and invited family and friends for comment. All chose the combined colour. I can only say God probably felt sorry for us and we totally lucked out. But valuable lesson, sample on the wall first before buying gallons, especially in rooms with lots of natural lighting.

Skylark, my LR/DR looked like a patchwork quilt - I had so many colours of yellow - it was ridiculous. But I did eventually find the right colour! Thank goodness for those little pots of paint from BM.

This is a great option for side lighting a mirror. It's the best method for eliminating facial shadows at the mirror.

I love this article! It is full of my pet peeves. The only one I generally don't follow is the stand alone fridge.. I find that built ins stay cleaner and provide added storage space.

I pay attention to my foyer, my lighting is good enough, nothing matches, my frig is ordinary, I'm working on #12, but I adore white trim and beige because it's really Swiss Coffee and Muslin--and isn't that cozy?
