Zone 7 with shady natural front yard needs year round color and/or green. We don't want to see just brown! What can we plant for rapid establishment starting now?

Hi bbd48. Other conditions come into play, i.e. moist vs dry, light-medium-heavy shade etc., but as a general rule I can give you a few things to look at. Very rapidly establishing plants are not what you want, trust me. Things like ivy will haunt you in the future. Look to things like mass plantings of ferns, rhododendron, aucuba, mahonia, epimedium, prostrate hemlocks, hellebores, hostas etc. A bit of research on your end, with some patience, will allow you to have a garden that satisfies you deep down. Good luck.
