Tape off the laminate and the cabinet and spray with a sealer. Then where the counter top meets the cabinets run a bead of clear silicone caulk. No matter how careful you are you're going to splash some water. The goal is to treat the counter and cabinet so that it can't soak into the wood or substrate of the counter.

Hayleydaniels: ha! That's better (and at least more practical) than "throne" or "potty" or "sit here"!

Small Kitchens with no upper cabinets and just open shelves. I've seen remodels of small kitchens where the upper cabinets are removed for open shelves and a wall of cabinets are knocked out for a more open look. Where would anyone put their stuff? Unless it's a super large kitchen with a big pantry and plenty of lower cabinets, those open shelves are going to get cluttered which is an even bigger design pet peeve. And only stark white of course.

I would start by looking through pictures on houzz or videos on line. Here are a few we made.

It's a tiny kitchen so maybe search specifically on houzz for tiny kitchen ideas. Maybe new cabinets to the ceiling to maximize storage?

Definitely paint the whole thing black (or another color) but not two-toned!

Meet Me at the Wrecking Ball
I'm confused. You want to change this wonderful space, and you're willing to shell out $10K to do it?? You are extremely fortunate people! What would I do (and only if I were dying to part with my money)? . . . I'd update the backsplash and buy new stools, and then I'd open a Roth IRA and celebrate the fact that I've just added to my family's financial well-being. Seriously, have you seen some of the dilemmas on here? Your kitchen looks like it's in a magazine. Congratulations on your good fortune.

Yes our cabinets are maple with a saddle color. White wasn't an option since thermafoil was our only choice in white, not very good quality. We went with maple over the oak at least.

Since it's a brand new kitchen we will need to stick with the maple saddle colored cabinets which I actually like.. I wanted to do a small kitchen island with a copper top to play off the cabinets but hubby shot that down based on cost. We will be adding a small island to give us a few more pull out drawers and place for the garbage can. I am considering white for this however maybe teal too...

Declutter. Lol. I sure will try. Not much I can really do since there has to be some toys for a 2 year old boy and 6 year old girl and the great big giant train table probably isn't going anywhere. Yes, we moved furniture, removed bookcase, revamped dining set with color, added window treatments as you can see from the other posts down the thread. Also, expedit shelves have been discontinued. The replacement, Kallax, does not have 5 shelves like our expedit so we are out of luck. So we moved it. I would like to buy two matching bookshelves to make a DIY built in on the tv wall. Thanks for the comments I really do appreciate all of them.

Backsplash thoughts?

Leslie, that sounded like a good question to me. However I've come to realize this is a site similar to a design book or magazine. They take the time to place pictures and articles and like to credit those images and words, which is a wonderful idea. Pinterest is a user-driven site that allows masses the opportunity to show their personal styles and interests. Again Leslie, it was a good question.
