Awesome idea book! My husband and I live off the grid in Northwestern Ontario. We use wind and solar power with gas generation for backup. We are striving to drop the gas generation soon in order to further reduce our carbon footprint. Our winter heat and source of cooking is from a energy efficient wood cook stove (best meals and baking ever, bar none). Our hot water is heated through a heat coil in the same stove and provides us with hot water for showers and dishes etc. Our water is a rain catchment system from our sheet metal roof. Filtered gray water is used to water our gardens using a drip irrigation system.
Is it a difficult life? I'm almost 60 now and I really have to say that no, it's not. Once everything is in place and you learn what your limitations are for electrical and water use is then everything works pretty smoothly. Even better is the fact that there is never a big utility bill of any kind in our mailbox and I like that a lot!

I have learned that yellow is THE colour to use in the garden for early spring bloom when all else is still brown, green and grey. It provides just the right contrast that pops with the freshness of spring. I love to use hamamelis (witch hazel) for this reason and find the yellow flowers of Arnold's Promise (image below) offer more visual delight than the equally beautiful orange or red cultivars. Forsythia is nice when flowering but otherwise a beast in the garden.

Pratt and Lambert color Popcorn/Soufflé is a light soft yellow. It is just cheerful enough. I painted my foyer and long dark hall this color 3 years ago. Plan to use is in my breakfast room, it is easy on the eyes.

I just finished painting my vaulted bedroom ceiling with Sherwin Williams Lemon Meringue. It's a nice pick me up to the gray walls. Happy and comfy room.
