@bcuyler, There are always trips to "the mall" with your pick-up truck (the mall is what my wife and I euphemistically call our local dump -- now a clean, well-organized waste management and recycling center where things like doors and windows can often be salvaged . . . ) You might break fewer fingernails at Habitat for Humanity and thrift stores also carry lots of fenestration materials looking for a home. (Rescue doors?) A scooch up the food chain, I'd say there are some excellent values in molded doors and popularly priced stile + rail doors. This gives you the option to buy machined or pre-hung doors and possibly consolidate all of your trim and hw needs at the same time. If you shoot me a side note, I can give you some retailers in your area. You'll have to find your local "mall" on your own :-)

The temperature it needs to be kept at varies greatly with the quality of the thermal envelope of the building. I would caution you about generalized statements with this audience here on Houzz. It's hard to say something is "usually" one way or another. Perhaps where you are located it is the dominant form of radiant heating (where I am, it is as well). However, it is only just now becoming popular in the US, for example, where many of our readers are based. As I mentioned in the article, lower temperatures (as you describe) are the sign of a system that is being used properly, in conjunction with an energy efficient house. However, this requires that your building is well equipped to keep that heat in. I totally understand what you're saying, but I think you're basing your comments on location specific info perhaps - that's all I'm saying.

As for the comments about the design tastes of Russians and Eastern Europeans... I'm surprised no one has taken a bit of offense! Can't we just leave it at cultural differences in design taste? :)

The sunset photo is taken from under the pergola or veranda (not sure what to call it, but it is attached on one side to the house!) at our White Surf home in Vero Beach Florida. The next photo is taken from the enterainment area on the ground floor - looking out at the resort pool. Final is the ideabook link which contains more pictures of this house, just in case anyone is interested in looking at our design equivalent of baby photos.

Brilliant use of space in the Brooklyn apartment. Many people in NY have to rent storage space because they have no room for their winter stuff in summer/summer stuff in winter. And, of course, luggage.

I think that first divider closet would be perfect between a foyer and a great room, but in the middle of an open concept room it would drive me crazy! Also, if I was looking to buy the place with the storage around the fireplace, I'm afraid the first thing I would say is "Well, that thing has got to go!" To each his own, I guess. :)
