We have 25 foot ceilings in our great room. We love the open feel however we struggle with what do with the vast expanse of wall. We have the same issue in our master bedroom - I sit in bed and just stare at empty walls. Suggestions welcome.

The comment about changing the batteries in smoke detectors is dead on - we had ours start beeping when we had a power outage in the middle of the night - nothing like getting a ladder out in the pitch black in one's boxers to disconnect it so one could sleep.

Margery: Interestingly, I've found that some potential buyers pretend they don't like the special touches because they want to use their so-called displeasure to bring the price down. Sometimes they're coached by realtors to do that. And HGTV participants are clearly coached on what to say. (I'd love to see an expose about what really happens at the "reveals." If it were me, I'd take one look at some of these designs and comment -- not in a good way -- OMIGOD!) As far as camping, I knew one family whose job involved two transfers and so they wouldn't buy a dining room set until they were certain that they were "settled" in their last home. No holiday or special-event dinners -- so many missed opportunities -- for years! And, in that case, shortly after they moved into that last house, they got divorced! Another wouldn't hang anything on the walls so they'd stay unmarked. It was depressing going into their bland home. A third kept furniture several inches from the wall so as not to scuff them up. I can't even describe how silly that looked!

BTW, vanilla ice cream is good....if you pour hot fudge over it and top it with whipped cream and a cherry!

Having said all of this, I am pleased to report that the unprecedented days and days of rain here in the desert southwest have finally come to an end. But, since I'm here, I'll scroll up once again to the photos of that cheerful prize-winning kitchen for a peek anyhow because is still makes me smile.

I wonder how many folks like me are artists in one way or another and keep a 'vanilla' home so it can be an ever changing backdrop for our ever changing work? I hope folks can enjoy their homes in the way that works for them. Someone once commented that our home was clearly full of things we love. It was the best compliment I ever got. As my dd says, 'home is where your stuff is'. Congrats for the award on a unique kitchen. Not for me but definitely unique.

Rose Friton! Utterly amazing! I was reading your nice comment when there was a knock on my door??? There it was, a package from Nancy Kimball at The Kimball store in Northeast Harbor ME!!! My designer goes sailing 'down Maine' every summer and spotted terry cloth finger tip towels there and knew I was trying to find some! WHY have they stopped making them??? So I Called and finally after talking to the 5th person, was able to order 8 of them for my brand new bathroom! But that was about a month ago and I'd given up! They are not cheap but are beautiful! I LOVE Maine but only got there once, sailing of course! I love my SS large sink from Ferguson so much and it is great for MY OWN LOBSTER POT! When I go to Pensacola (often, only 45 miles from Farihope) the #3 fish market in the US is there and they always have a coupleof huge tanks fullof very fresh Maine lobsters at very decent prices! I figure if I'd gotten a porcelain sink I'd soon drop a cast iron skillet in it...but be sure to get a SS one with rounded corners! I am NOT a clean freak but the square corners are much less sanitary! Even though I removed an outside wall to add 4 ft to the size of my kitchen I was still 'space-challenged' so a drawer DW would have not been easy to fit in. Just being one person now I don't need to open/close mine that often! Thanks for your comment! Ummmm...Maine!!! Margery Griffith

I love walnut and glossy white. Gorgeous natural yet glam combination. We are going to do our entryway in a walnut built-in closet and a wall of glass cabinets that can get pictures put under the glass so I can make a huge mural that is drawn on paper and protected under a wall of glass doors. It's great to see similar materials so I can tell how ours will look! (I haven't shown my sketches to the builder yet, so they are very rough.)

Thank you, everyone, for these great lists! I'm going to not only use them myself but for others as gift ideas. I will even go so far as to print them for our children, young adults, who are setting up their household. If there's something on the list they know they would never use, they can always strike through it, but the lists will be a great starting point. As many have, I have put some of these things in place already but others ....well, I can't wait to!
I do keep a notebook for assorted occasion cards and lots of thank you cards. There's just something extra special about getting a card in the mail. Again, thank you everyone for the many great ideas!

Someone asked for a printable version. I've copied most of this, dropped a few items I don't need, added a few that I do, and saved the result as a .JPG image. There's even a little space at the end to write in anything I missed. And it's all on one page. Hope you'll find it useful.

Marjorie Bull, some dowel rods and some inexpensive café curtain rod brackets will serve your purpose quite well and look charming. I still see the small sort of chrome and the swing out towel rods at my hardware store available though.

In order to receive a building permit the architect should be required to demonstrate they can get all the way from an automobile into a shower or bathtub with a wheelchair or walker. It's pretty stupid to end up prematurely in an assisted living situation merely because you can't take a bath.

Showers should have really solid grab rails for safety and/or recreation.

Showers should have a place to sit down to wash your feet or shave your legs.

Two shower heads are a must, especially if you shower by yourself.
Once you shower with two heads every other shower you take will be lacking in quality.
Five heads are better than two. Showers are one of the best parts of the day.
You should treat yourself.
