Superb ideas and reasons to use pots. I'll add my reason for successfully using pots - gophers and moles. Pots add color and character to the garden. Thank you for the enlightening article. It was very helpful.

For a number of years I have grown tulips in some black plastic pots that I can drop into any gaps that appear in the flower borders during spring. I have recently started doing the same with Lillies for summer time.

I wonder how long until someone posts a horrified complaint about the stuffed cactus teaching young, impressionable minds that it's ok to run up to a live cactus and hug it: "That's an ER visit waiting to happen!". LOL.

The mobile IS lovely. :)

Fantastic picks. I am relocating back east from Santa Fe, NM (currently childless) & would love a fun, non-clichéd desert inspired room as an ode to the my former home. These suggestions are perfect. ¡Gracias!

Good choices.

Don't let the spines on the Agave deter you. If you clip them off, they will not regrow, so after the first "manicure" you only have to do the new leaves as they appear.

Here in Northern California one of my favorite gray-green plants is our California native Romneya coulteri, common name Matilija Poppy. It is hard to see from this photo but the foliage is a lovely gray-green with a hint of blue. The flowers are stunning. Here is a photo.

As a grandparent, and rancher, we worry our city dwelling offspring and grandchild manage enough non-motorized outdoor time. So for the past two summers we've gifted our grandson (and his mom gets a break for) a week of Wilderness Awareness School. Last year it was Twin Eagles near Sandpoint, Idaho, and this year it's in Duvall, Washington (wildernessawareness.org). No phones or games, no TV or radio either. It's learning through fun, with wonderful young instructors the pupils consider cool, and who are completely in tune with nature. After that week of camp we take Alex two weeks, bringing him back to our remote, rural acres where he gets up close and personal with Hereford steers, lambs, chickens, bees, driving a tractor, building buck & rail fences, fishing, swimming and eating from the garden. And he gets to see how satisfying it is to work hard, to humanely raise livestock, and farm without antibiotics, GMOs, herbicides or pesticides.

No virtual on our watch.

Whilst I am not a fan of minimalist interiors (nor will I ever be) I admired Japanese style when I visited years ago; it is something else, not just a paring back of objects to functionality, but an acute awareness of space, and colour balance. I particularly loved their graphic style on everything they use, always showing a restraint, a pulling back from over embellishment.. right down to the chopstick rest.... balance and style always.

Gardening Fun: Plant a Fairy Garden

These small gardens are a great teaching tool to show how magical gardens can be. If you have the right elements in your own people sized garden I have found fairies will take up residence there. Fairies love gardens with lots of flowers and wildlife. They feel the most safe when there are bees and birds, bats and butterflies, bugs and slugs. If you look closely in your garden you may find evidence of fairies living there. I have discovered fairy rings (mushrooms growing in a large circle around a tree) in my garden and one time even happened upon a fairy feast that was on top of a mushroom. Luckily I had my camera with me and I took a picture. I went into the house to call my husband out into the garden to see what I had discovered but when we went back out the feast had disappeared.
There is so much magic in a garden and so few people spend enough time outdoors.
Here is a picture of the fairy feast sitting on top of a mushroom.

Reminds me of making miniature gardens on old tin trays around 60(!) years ago in England. There was always a 'pond', which was a small round mirror, and the lawn was made of moss. After that they differed with whatever small plants and found objects we chose.

I have a running friend who displays all of her marathon medals hanging on a rack in her powder room. I can just picture a guest gently taking one (like her Boston marathon medal) off of the rack, placing it around their neck and looking at themselves in the mirror, turning from side to side.

I thought it was pretty cool as the powder room is perhaps the one "private" place while being a guest.

Really cute theme for a nursery. The great thing about it is that this theme should work for many years - not just for baby. I always go to Etsy for inspiration. You found some great items there.

It would be fun to design a Viking garden for kids.
