Christian, your wifi camera idea made me wonder if that would work for checking in on a senior parent, too.

We have rented from VRBO for years, and loved being in a HOME. We choose a different one each year. I'd hate to go back to a motel or condo, as it is sure sweet being in a furnished home, next to a cool vacation spot. We use google earth to verify the settings, and see what's around, to get great locations! Pictures and feedback help with the decision. Glad there's people willing to rent their vacation homes!

Cathy, you're right, the wifi cameras are great for a senior parent. I looked after my grandfather who had Alzheimer's for a couple of years before he passed. I was able to monitor him while I was at work via the cameras. Because they also have speakers, I could talk to him, "Grandpa, don't scratch your head!". He would say, "Oh, Ok." and it was very helpful. I could also check in on the other caregivers. Finally, it's also good for kids at home, baby, teens, etc... No more raging parties (at least in the living room) when the folks are away for the weekend.

Capeanner, it's true that it may be a little creepy for some to have the cameras in house. But if you had the camera recording inside the house and someone broke into the home while you were away, you'd be glad you had the evidence. Same with the garage, you could see who took the power washer. I guess everything is a compromise at some point, and is part of a larger discussion about privacy vs. security.

I wanted two bare bulb pendants in our guest room so my husband assembled them, picking out the suitable elements at the hardware store. Luckily there are outlets on the right places by the bed, so they are plug-in pendants with switches right on the pendant. Lightbulbs with silver bottoms are perfect for non-glaring light. They are perfect for a contemporary, pared back look.

I live in Georgia where the summer humidity is high, but we do have some less humid nights. I have an outdoor sofa that is so comfortable that some of my best nights sleep has been out on the porch. The prime time is spring and fall though, when the weather is awesome!

I almost picked up the raspberry bush and the peach sorbet blueberry this spring at my local nursery. I opted not to, mostly due to the price, but I wasn't sure how they would fair in the North Texas heat. It gets really hot here over the summer. I do have a blackberry plant in an earth box that is growing well so maybe these would too. I'll have to look for them again in the spring.

Thanks for the feedback and information. I bought a variety of 6 of these plants which were under $30 each in Winnipeg at a local nursery. I got a few raspberries from one bush and look forward to the others all fruiting next spring. In November we'll cover them up well for the winter as we're in zone 3 here. By the way there was a bumper crop of wild blueberries in the boreal forests of eastern Manitoba this summer and we even picked a few of the remnants in the damper shady areas last weekend!

I'm one of those people who is always bitching about painting everything white. This shows that it can be done w/out looking ice cold and clinical. The suble color in these warm white-on-white rooms is lovely. That vanilla in the bathrooms, bedroom and living room is just luscious.

Katy Jordan, I too have a TV on a swing arm in my small gym (spare bedroom). The whole thing is a bit ungainly and there's no way of making it blend in, but I like having it there to make exercise time pass more quickly. I wound up all the cords and have kept them in place with cable ties, which made me happier about the look of it.

Because I allow only a limited amount of time for sitting on my tush watching TV, I choose what programs I want to see. When it's time for one of them, I switch the setting from the roku, which displays my family photo slideshow, to the television channel I will be watching. When the program is over I switch it back.

Allowing mindless programming to run endlessly on your television is an invitation to sit on your rear and be fed one commercial message after another, interrupted by programs you aren't really enthusiastic about watching.
