"How about now?" is how I've kept my home neat during a bout with C that has sapped my energy even as it has brought family and friends to visit more frequently.

"Now" is while I wait for the coffee to brew, for the onions and peppers to brown, for tv commercials to air. And it helps that I don't want anyone to think I'm not coping. I joke that I do my dishes during the commercials.

So I appreciate the neighbor who takes the garbage out when she leaves after a brief visit, and the granddaughter who spends a few minutes cleaning the bathroom each time she's here. But "how about now" keeps my apartment neat enough to always be ready for company, and to keep me content.

You guys are funny and kind of rude. "City People"? Why be so disparaging? Who cares if they have two kitchens. Lots of people have a small second kitchen in the basement. Their second kitchen is fairly modest and will probably be put to good use in the cold season.

I have a small house on Flathead Lake and believe it or not some years, last year in fact, the mosquitoes and bugs are practically nonexistent. Other years, like two summers ago they will carry you off. But, they have a screened porch. Seems smart to me, open up the house when the bugs are low, use the screened porch when the bugs are high. I intend on building a screened porch one day for that very reason. And as for spiders and stink bugs, they find their way in with the doors and windows closed.

Also, in my area, there are no building codes, nothing to do with covenants. Sorry. But other areas do. Just depends on the jurisdiction.

I find the house very innovative and interesting. If someone gave it to me, I would snap it up in a heart beat.

I enjoy seeing articles and pictures about ALL styles of architecture and design. If you have a question then ask it politely please. For example "what, if any, precautions were taken to ensure the wood doesn't rot due to exposure to the elements?" Then the author will more than likely respond (as this one did) and clarify. If commenters continue to insult the contributors I fear we are going to miss out on new ideas and projects and that would be a shame.

Pocodot: we are using boiled linseed oil and garnet shellac on our woodwork. It's non-toxic, dries quickly and has a beautiful luster on cherry. It's also easy to fix should it get damaged, which is unlikely, and requires only regular dusting--no wax or polish.

Lovely design, but what I've been wondering is what is behind the door that gets covered by the bookcase and if you come through that door wouldn't you fall down the staircase?

I too have a small backyard and I think I can use some of the tips mentioned in the ideabook. But I think you have made use of too much of hardscaping which needs much time and efforts. Anyways the ideas were great. I would love to incorporate at mine.

White is always a good choice because its a classic look. However, black is bold and unique. It makes a statement. A lot of times, white looks too safe. Take a risk, be bold. Both are very clean looks though so either way you wouldn't be disappointed.

The Moroccan Light is amazing! Not sure if it looks better on or off. The shape of the light itself is beautiful, but the most exciting part of the lamp to me is the patterns that it reflects onto the ceiling when it is lit. Truly a pretty and well designed piece.
