Summers get really hot here in La Paz, Mexico, and I don't have AC. My five huge ceiling fans wouldn't win any decorating prizes, but I couldn't get through the season without them. I LOVE air blowing on me when I'm sleeping, and hot air is better than none.

I think the cabinets look great - and I disagree with the tile guy about using dark - behind the stove you might do something like a stainless panel, but then I think neutral and light is a great idea. Go for an elongated off-white glass subway tile. You'll love it, it works with your neutrals . . . just make sure it is a warm white to pick up the warmth of the wood.

Painting the cabinets white would help brighten it up and update the look. I would also look for some new hardware and remove the trim detail above the sink. The dishwasher looks very odd, I would personally try and rotate it so it faces into the kitchen area not the side.

I love framed candid photos of our family and of various places we've been. The material things i love the most are the things received from loved ones. Love my grandmother's canning jars she used, now filled with marbles I played with as a small child when at her house :-). Love to look at the beauty of our back yard and river, and enjoy the artwork of nature :-).

I like the idea of the Scandinavian bleached floors. I would probably wait to pick another color for the walls until I laid the floor or, at the very least, make a choice on the floors and pick a gray that coordinates with it. What color is your back splash?

I think Eagle Rock by Benjamin Moore would be a better fit. It's warmer, but will provide a nice contrast for your backsplash, flooring and appliances. Plus, with all the natural light, a darker color might be a better fit.

You can see it here- http://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-color/eaglerock

Hope this helps, good luck!

Paint the cabinets, add new counter tops. They make high definition laminates and products that look like granite without the expense of granite. Painted cabinets and a wood looking floor is a good combination but a wood looking floor and wood cabinets will not help the heavy dark look you are trying to eliminate. When you are all done you might consider a medium color in place of the dark red and it should brighten up and hopefully make your dreams come true.

If you build your own, shelves are easier than cabinets. We also have a small kitchen (by US standards) and shelves in the upper areas make small areas feel larger. We demolished the only area that had upper cabinets (which came with the house) and will replace c a shelf that extends the lower border of the new hood. We began the remodel in late March and won't have the kitchen completed until early summer. Thus the photos of a work in progress. The stuff that's on shelves is used often w/o dust being an issue. The cutting board replaceda cooktop with a downdraft vent. Even with that wimpy vent system, grease and splatter did not seem to be a problem, but then DW is compulsive about a clean kitchen.

The traditional gardens remind me of my mother and grandmother so I like that a lot. My garden is cluttered now but it is only my third year in my home and I am learning what does well here. I moved from Maui to the Sierra Foothills so it is a big change. I have planted tons of Hostas and am excited to see how they fill in what was once bare dirt in the shady areas. Those areas will not seem cluttered, thank goodness. That is the great thing about gardens, they are ever changing and what doesn't work can be moved or given away.

I am not sure that you have too much stuff, but think that it might be too scattered. There is no place to rest one's eyes. The ideal would be to have certain areas clear of "stuff". I didn't see a display cabinet or wall shelves--maybe some shelves one one wall, painted to match the wall, would provide a place to display your favorite pieces. Because you like to display things in you window, have you considered adding glass shelves across the center also? This would be especially nice if you have glass objects to display. If you want all your art collection, it might be that the tall plants could go. Is the bow on the curtain essential? I wonder if you could get rid of some of the furniture--for example, the white table next to the couch and maybe the white plant table behind the rocking chair. I don't think it would take much to make this place look great.

With a small kitchen, every inch counts to have room for a work area and storage. I suggest installing additional and more efficient kitchen cabinet system utilizing the whole wall (from floor to ceiling) where you have the chest freezer and metal office filing cabinet.

Another way to utilize your space more effectively is to replace your counter top microwave with an over the range microwave and replacing your chest freezer with a narrow upright freezer instead so you can use the whole height of this wall.

You probably have 'underutilized' space under your kitchen island. Installing pullout drawers will make it more efficient [houzz=Small Expandable Pull-Out Shelf]

Using organizers such as under shelf storage, behind cabinet door storage, organizing racks inside the cabinets and under t he cabinets will be a big help too

houzz=Rev-A-Shelf In-Cabinet Chrome Cabinet Organizer][houzz=Polytherm Undershelf Baskets]
[houzz=Behind the Door Wire Storage]
[houzz=Iron Spice Rack]
[houzz=Wusthof Under-Cabinet Swinger Block]

I also suggest placing a pot rack above your kitchen island as storage just like this one:

A great idea I saw, from IKEA, is to use their towel rail, attached to the ceiling, along with some simple hooks, to hang pans from. It's cheaper than a pot rock, looks nice, and really gets them up and out of the way.

Thanks for the info. I spend $85 a month to have this man take care of the pool and was told it costs about $30 in chemicals monthly to keep it clean so I figured I pay his about $50 for the labor fee which I guess isnt bad. Mainly on hot summer days where its 100 degrees in the blazing sun it saves me from having to do it myself and since I have back pain I figured it less to worry about when the sides occationally need scrubing. He also seem to know when the solar isnt working how to fix it or when the filter housing craked how to replace that as well so I guess I need the help for the labor related stuff since I would have to do it with a bad back. I never heard of a sand filter.

I picked the first one. I do like art but mainly landscapes and abstract (without faces) BUT I have seen how stunning an effect they can have on living rooms or dining rooms even. I saw a dining room scene where there were two very similar art works as above ( one huge one in grey as above and one in a reddish, yellowish ) they were next to each on the wall. The other was a grey art work painting in a lounge mainly of white walls and grey curtains and had some vintage items in one area, it all went very well together- I think if those art works were removed, the impact wouldn't be there anymore. Thus, I can see the effects of such work whether personalized with partial photos or not.

I'm in my 60's too and recently built a small house and put in a glass shower surround. I do not like it at all as it is almost impossible to keep clean. We have well water that has minerals so that might be a part of the problem, but I've found no product or home remedy that works well. I'm looking forward to taking out the glass and putting in a shower curtain.

Our bath is done like in the second photo, only our tub needed a tiled front. Because of all the jets in it, there wasn't a free standing model. But it's semi built in, with the tile surround being flush with the top of the bath. A less 'massive' look and it gives you space to put your bathing necessities (like wine and candles) on.

I am a tea nut, always have been. There's nothing worse than electric teapots. They never bring the water to a good rolling boil to steep your tea in! Especially depending on what type of tea you are steeping. Electric teapots always turn off as soon as they start to boil and cool down just as quickly. You can keep them. They will never have a place in my kitchen.

well I don't think your kitchen looks that bad. I have had horrible kitchen which looked far worse and were far less functional. LOoks like you have a small galley kitchen and white is bright and clean looking and would give a greater sense of space than darker colors.
Given your window is above the sink do you really want a fussy window dressing which will subjected to water and near food. A simple blind would suffice , and would allow you to add some color. The light fitting is odd looking,replacing it with something else would help a lot. Is the floor damaged or you just don't like it? Black and white tiles/square are a classic look.

Unless these photos are deceptive the kitchen looks to be in good shape. Do you really want to replace the floor and paint the cupboards when you really want to do a total makeover.? Renovating is so expensive. do you really want to spend money on very temporary changes you will discard soon? I think a nice colored blind, one or two pictures on the walls, a nice potp lant or vase of flowers on the bench top, some color coordinated kitchenware and the space would look quite warm, friendly and bright .

I appreciate that this kitchen does not have an island. I know, I know, that's what "everybody" puts in their kitchen, but this makes me want to sit down at the table and chat with the cook while my grandkids run their cars along that beautiful floor. (I know, they might scratch it. I have a "hand-sculpted" hickory kitchen floor and LOVE it...and the grandkids do things that will scratch it up eventually.)
