Mostly presented pictures are designed for CONVERSATION in mind not living. Who is seating for face to face conversation every evening?
Design your living room only for your family, not for entertaining, guests…because you/family must be comfortable at least 350 days a year. If LR is small, more likely the house is small and you have to have it fully functional with minimum furniture, for example sofa, a small ottoman, book case which can be used for books, décor, and small TV if you have no other appropriate space on wall, side table or coffee table 2 tire a must, to keep games, magazines on bottom shelf and use top (presented tables are waste), maybe for PC or laptop desk height table if you don’t have spare room, or want see sites your kids/teens surf, that’s all. In such room you can read, browse through magazines, surf on Internet, watch TV, do yoga, and if you need extra seats for guests, not a big deal, you can bring in dining chairs in such occasion.
Love seat is not an option, such a waste of space. Family of 3 need full size sofa. With 1 guest love seat also tight (mouth to mouth conversation), while on sofa you keep distance. Two armchairs actually cover the same area as sofa due to space between two. Did you notice that many smaller pieces in the room look more crowded than 1 bigger piece? No-no for sofa without back, while room can look less stuffed it’s not comfortable therefore a useless piece you can’t afford to have.
Built in shelving also not a good idea, needs change, so small space should be very flexible for different arrangement.

Who really wants to sit on anything backless? Even armless. Such seats might work ok for an eat-on-tray party, but not for relaxed conversation. And sectionals---the corner gets lost, the 2 guys on either side of the corner have their legs and feet rubbing against each other. For conversations you will have, at best, only 2 people on each sofa and one in each comfortable (arms and back) chair.
