I'm in love. My favorite designer is Ralph Lauren and now I've add Mr. Wood. My first trip to Chicago and the first place I want to go to was the Ralph Lauren flag ship store, restaurant and bar. I wanted to live there. Love it all and would love to have my small home styled by Mr. Lauren and Mr. Wood. I haven't found the help I need where I live. It seems everyone is hooked on gray paint and (over done) faux French design. Wish I could afford you Mr. Wood. Thanks for sharing so I can dream.

Three comments here really leapt out at me and I wanted to offer a hearty "Amen." First of all, the comment about what it means to see a vision fully and perfectly realized - even if that is not a vision of one's own preferred style. I love seeing rooms in the styles I prefer (especially very well done ones), but I think I actually learn the most from seeing a perfectly executed version of a style I'm not partial to. I may not change my style preferences, but it always opens my eyes. As it happens Mr. Wood's style is not that far from my preferences - my home right now has more light colors and florals (yes, that's quite different), and I love radiators, but my favorite movie house is the Addams Family mansion, so I am a big fan of the dark colors, too - anything but beige and white, really. All this to say - I want to second the comment that this is such a perfect execution of its style, even if it weren't already to my taste, I would be blown away. As it is, I am now in the market for more framed art - and a horn chair.

Second, the black lab and the roaring fire. YES.

And third, Mr. Wood's own comment about how he has very little filler AND MOST OF HIS THINGS HE HAS HAD FOR TWENTY YEARS. I hope I grow up to have this trait (I am 32 now, and there are actually things in my house I have had for 20 years, but not many. He has a head start on me, though, and there are plenty of things I've gotten in the last 20 years that I have no intention of getting rid of). This alone puts to shame so much of even the most high-end design I see - all purchased in a year, to be replaced in five. Beauty is enduring. (And as far as filler - I am working really hard on that fault in my decorating as well. It's tempting to collect small things when I see them for a good price, or to be drawn to shiny objects, but I am trying to discipline myself to add only what is useful AND beautiful, and things that are - regardless of their price - fundamentally valuable and that I will want to own for a long time.)

What an extraordinary example.

I have to share info on the nicest RV park I have ever found in case any of you are traveling through or looking for a place to stay longer term. It is called Oak Grove RV Park and is located in Hatfield, PA. My husband lived in that park for over 2 years in his RV while trying to sell a home in another state. I visited him there a few times and it is so beautiful. It is family owned and several generations of the family work constantly to keep the park pristine. I swear, a branch falls from a tree and they are on it in no time getting it picked up! There are a few mobile homes in the park but the owner actually purchases ones that are up to his standards and then people can buy them. They have a nice pool and laundry room. There's a rec center where the campers and full timers hold monthly pot lucks. There are many summer campers who return to the park yearly when their grandchildren are out of school and they all look forward to seeing their summer friends! The place has tall trees with tons of shade, nice clean sites, immaculate landscaping and roads. It truly is the best I have ever encountered. I promise, I have no relation to this place other than visiting it. I live in Texas and couldn't handle the cold up there!

We are building my dream barn on part of our acreage and are including our fifth wheel into the mix. It will be tucked away under one of the side eaves, camouflaged by well-placed trees. I adore our cozy little trailer (has a "fireplace" even) and it means a bathroom and extra hangout quarters, with AC!, will all be close to barn. Now you have me foaming at the mouth to paint the oak cabinets ;).

Great job!

Love the idea "to make the structures appear like shadows in the forest". A beautiful and restful effect (see 6th photo from bottom).

i am trying to pick how dark my tint should be. I have a western exposure and a lot of glass, so I originally thought I should get the darkest-15 Night Vision by 3M. But as I look at the sample, my landscaping looks so much better through the 25. the dealer tells me that the damage blocking between the two is not that significant and to choose the one I like the most. I am concerned that it will be like most things I have done-when making the moderate choice I always wish later that I had done more. Any thoughts?

Deirdre - why don't you pay to install one of each side by side on two windows. Sit on it a few days.

I agree the heat savings is not that significant, and would personally go for the slightly less heat blockage but have the view you will enjoy the most.

This is a beautiful renovation.

We bought a house where the entire downstairs -- and the garage space -- were an apartment. Converting it back was, luckily, not too difficult. I wouldn't want to give up my inside, warm garage space during the winter, but I totally love what this family did. Good for them!

There's a vaguely hacienda-like look to the overhang and patio coupled with the French doors that is SO inviting - such a difference from the plain Jane "before." The interior is warm and welcoming and a lot more pleasing to survey then the contents of the old garage space! I'd hazard a guess that on 17 acres, a home was found/made/or already present for the garage's contents.

At the end of the project, I bet these folks wondered why they waited so long to do this really wonderful renovation!
