If you want to accent the tile shape as part of your design element then please use a soft grey. Look at photos of both options and even cut and paste them on your wall so you can pass by them to see if that is good for you. I've done white, lite grey, darker grey and a smokey tone. Every time it looks good because it's classy.

The best way to handle this is to make 2 mock-ups of each combination. You can then prop them up in the actual space and see what it will look like. Home centers sell small project sized pieces of plywood or Sheetrock patch panels that you can glue or thin-set a few pieces, or even full courses of tile onto and then grout with your color options. Well worth the time and nominal expense.....
