My disaster of the century was a paint mistake. A few days(2) prior to a huge Thankgiving gathering I noticed how dingy our living/dining room looked and decided to paint it a cheerful and bright color. Went and picked out something called English Rose. When I tested it on a small area of the wall,it looked quite nice ,so I continued .Being a person who MUST complete a project once started, I painted the whole room . Once finished I stepped back to look...to my horror my English Rose room looked as if it had been painted in Pepto Bismal....not the look I was wanting just prior to Thanksgiving...or anytime actually!

I feel your pain! I inherited similar ugly black granite in my kitchen. It always looks dull and dusty no matter how much I try to polish or how clean it actually is. During our reno we painted out our oak cabinets in a medium-tone grey and replaced the island counter top with a white quartz (with grey flecks). Unfortunately, we've had to keep the black granite on the others for now. I highly recommend the quartz - so much better than the black! The grey cabinets do help blend in the black, though. Anyway, in our city, Habitat for Humanity has what they call the Re-store, where they take donations of this kind of stuff and re-sell to fund their building projects - only thing is, you might need to get it to them. Not sure if they will come and remove it for you. Good luck! I can already picture your kitchen with different counters - would make a world of difference!

I think you are freaking out because the undertones don't work well with this wood tone. Just look again at the colors you selected for painting cabinets and island. Off-whites in the direction of the stone tone will be fine - even mid-tones int he direction of the stone undertones would be beautiful. If you picked a white, test, test, test - paint some posterboards now and test your paint colors - that will make all the difference.

I would tile straight up to the ceiling, but keep the width the same.

This is my fireplace and it looks like the stone you have. This will give you an idea whether you want to do it from floor to ceiling. I love how mine turned out. Good luck with what you decide.
