Great Article! We are planning on remodeling our kitchen - hopefully sometime in the next 5-10 years. It is great to have some focus to how to go about the slow planning stage. Or at least a great excuse to continue to browse Houzz;-)

I love species tulips, but unfortunately so do the rabbits and deer, so I have had to give them up. Because they are so low-growing (and many are early-blooming) companion planting with daffs or anything else really does not work. T. biflora (or Clusius), T. praestans fuselier and T. turkestanica are all good performers though--they do not have to be dug up, and will naturalize. They even came back pretty well after being eaten year after year, I just got bummed at having one day of blooms (on chewed up plants) before they were eaten. I'll try them again if I get fencing.

I love walnut and glossy white. Gorgeous natural yet glam combination. We are going to do our entryway in a walnut built-in closet and a wall of glass cabinets that can get pictures put under the glass so I can make a huge mural that is drawn on paper and protected under a wall of glass doors. It's great to see similar materials so I can tell how ours will look! (I haven't shown my sketches to the builder yet, so they are very rough.)

This has instant appeal. Great work and good for the family. Would love to be able to implement a similar design in our Brownstone....Ugh!

Please Phillip Solomon, ...If you have a beautiful Brownstone, it deserves much better than this. It deserves a sense of history and melding of the old with the necessary upgrades. It should have bit of quirkiness, not the mundane. If you need an example, (only an example, not exact) please watch the modern version of the Sherlock Holmes tv show called, "Elementary" on CBS. The set decoration is superb, and has many interesting ideas to use in a Brownstone.
