thats a nice idea but to tell you the truth its the original cove ceiling that this room started with. I stopped the ceiling short in order to avoid a difficult detail in this area. But a gradation......hmmmm...

bepsf - Ah, yes, 'tis a porte-cochere, not a carport. Yet the way it covers the space between the house and the columns, it does double duty as a porch; not all porte-cocheres do that.

I really like how a roof extension make an outside spec so functional. How would this work at our home?

Thanks for a very informative article. We have a lovely front porch 8' x 20'. The siding on the house is a sort of light blue. I am toying with the idea of painting the front door orange as I've seen and loved on Houzz, instead of the more traditional black. The porch floor is T&G pressure-treated. How does one decide what colour to paint the floor?????

Thanks kennedytarheel, even though I'm not an outspoken extreme environmentalist, I do believe in treading as lightly on the land as possible. I would like to think that the days of three layer tiered paved patios covering wide expanses is over, but I think not. After all, a garden should, in my opinion, be about plants, people, wildlife, and how they all interact in meaningful ways. But thinking outside the box is extremely important for me. The day I quit doing that is the day I retire and go to work for a big box store!

Hi agardnerdesign. Boardwalks are awesome, aren't they? I wasn't going to post photos of my latest garden project here at home until it's stained Chinese red next spring, but what the heck. BTW, my dogs won't walk on it as of yet.

Ok, Houzz has gotten to me. When I purchased this house, the backyard was a hot mess. The center of the yard had three dead trees. Poorly laid block walls and every inch of space had four purple or yellow plants.

Several weeks ago, Houzz had a picture of a dog fountain. That got me started. A trip to a cottage on Lake Erie filled in the rest. Now keep in mind that I'm a "senior" and I did it myself, so it isn't perfect, but it's mine!
