I love the kitchen and the innovative bowling alley table! The mismatched exterior bugs me a little. Wood or white but not both. It makes it look like something was just tacked on.

Fab! We moved from Austin 2 years ago to start a boutique vineyard just northwest of the city about an hour. Our house is a 100 year old farm house and comes with all of the charm...and headaches...these old beauties have to offer! We have a wrap around porch but it is much narrower so using it functionally year round is much more difficult since belongings are much more exposed to direct sunlight, rain, BUGS, etc... One of the things we found necessary upon moving in was to re-evaluate the spaces and the intended use of each space originally vs. what is practical in today's living. The long narrow living room is now the dining room and half of the extra large kitchen is now the sitting room...etc. it has been a fun journey so far! Side note: ours came with an old 1940s-1950s Kenmore oven! It works but we have taken it out to use in a guest house eventually....although the whole unit is 48" the oven cabinet is TINY!

Nice article, but to be of great value you would need to add a lot more information about how the house was designed and built to be efficient in horribly hot Texas summers. What is the orientation of the house (North? South?). What insulation and multi-pane windows were used? HVAC? Ducting? Use of ceiling fans? What looks good does not necessarily work well, and if you're going to build, you should be thinking "Passive Build" all the way through.
