Designanddine...my point exactly! The occasional dish towel from the kitchen is about the only laundry generated downstairs! I have three kids so I do a lot of laundry and I can't stand lugging it up and down the stairs every single day! Fortunately, they are getting old enough to lug most of it back up the stairs once it's clean. I'll probably catch some flack for this but until there are more women architects, we will continue to see homes where the laundry room is the last priority in the floor plan....just the fact that in most households it's the women doing the laundry. I said most, not all!

@Jeannie in a Garden, Good Point! They do have a standard of 27" in width so why not? I only know this because our cabinet maker measured wrong for my laundry wall and instead of having an extra couple of inches to play with beside the washer and dryer- I have to squeeze them in with only a 1/4" to spare!

I bought custom pleated shades from Budget Blinds for the front facing bedrooms a couple of years ago. The one in my bedroom is room darkening as light from the street light comes through the window (Room darkening did the trick). I forgot that there was a possibility that the remainder of the condo complex would be built, so the mistake I made was not getting the top down option or getting trilights. I'm debating on whether to get them. I had planned to get another room darkener for the guest bedroom, and put the current gbr shade in the loft/office (the windows are the same size). The moral of the story; get what you really want and stop trying to save $$-I regret not getting the trilights!!

Window blinds do look very good and add beauty to any room instantly but it is quite a difficult task to maintain them well. They get dirty very easily and get bent or damaged in just a few months. But obviously there are billions of people around the world who love window blinds.

I always have too many pairs of shoes/boots/sneakers in the hallway. I have no place else to put them. Everyone just takes them off and leaves them where they land.... so messy. There is only a very narrow hallway (about 3 feet maybe) so there isn't room for a storage unit and the front closet is packed with winter coats and tool stuff at the bottom and top of the it. I have no answers for decluttering except to have my basement and attic refinished. But these are very nice pics and ideas for others. :)

What a treat to be featured in such a great Ideabook! Thank you, Ms. Tusher for the mention. It seems we are relatively close to each other as well (I am from Marin and now live in San Carlos). Let me know if you are ever down on the Peninsula, I would love to buy you a cup of coffee (or wine)!

Depending on our schedules, I do what Wallner Builders does either before I go to bed, or first thing in the morning. I love going around the house and fluffing pillows, making sure all dishes are in the dishwasher, recycling items in the garage container, dirty laundry or decide what needs to be laundered today, etc.
Dusting days usually involve 4-5 rooms so it's consistent on each side of the house, same goes for vacuuming. No pets here, but a husband who is rather oblivious to small details. Love him to pieces though!

I agree with Liz and Lisa., There are just some things which make an immediate difference.
For me - no leaving the house for work in the morning without :
1 ) Making the bed,
2) Unpacking the clean dishes from the dishwasher and putting the morning's dirty dishes in - close the door!
3) Hanging the damp bathroom towels outside or somewhere in the sunshine
4) Cleaning the dog bowls once they finished eating and filling up the water bowls.
5) Straightening the throws and fluffing the pillows on the couches.

OK - so that's why I get up an hour before hubby - but it's worth it. Nothing is more depressing than walking into a kitchen with dirty dishes and a bedroom with an un-made bed, when you return from a long day's work. By doing these simple things I get to spend a bit more quality time with the dogs in the evening before I start cooking and doing the washing! Now I must just get hubby to follow suit! Why is it that ( most ) men can not be bothered by these things!

Yes, by all means, safety bars. And if not now, at least the blocking for them to be added later. In my 'Your new house' portfolio I plan to pass on, I have visually recorded every improvement we have done. Down to the studs pictures of blocking, electrical runs, plumbing, HVAC ducting, floor joist directions, types of underlayments under the hardwood and tile upgrades, insulation R factors and brands..... In short, every thing I wish had been passed on to me. Oh, and owners manuals of all appliances currently in the house. With their date of purchase and all warranty paperwork.
