Still thinking about that wood ceiling. I've seen high grade plywood sanded and holes plugged, and more than one layer of applied polyurethane used for finished floors. Had the same effect as the ceiling. Is it sheets of real wood up there, laminate or something else?

This is a beautiful renovation.

We bought a house where the entire downstairs -- and the garage space -- were an apartment. Converting it back was, luckily, not too difficult. I wouldn't want to give up my inside, warm garage space during the winter, but I totally love what this family did. Good for them!

There's a vaguely hacienda-like look to the overhang and patio coupled with the French doors that is SO inviting - such a difference from the plain Jane "before." The interior is warm and welcoming and a lot more pleasing to survey then the contents of the old garage space! I'd hazard a guess that on 17 acres, a home was found/made/or already present for the garage's contents.

At the end of the project, I bet these folks wondered why they waited so long to do this really wonderful renovation!

scarbowcow: The former owner of our house was handicapped and had the doorbell installed to the phone system. Don't ask me how, I am an electronic technician and I have no idea how. But the signal of the doorbell goes to this little box and at the side of the box there is the socket where you can plug in an analog phone. We now have a digital phone which is connected to the phone cable and the box just does the doorbell. Since the box has no speakers itself we wouldn't have a working doorbell if we didn't have this old phone connected to the box.

Thank you for a timely article. I am still in the process of finding 2 glazed pots, one smaller than the other to combine for a single fountain per instructions on a Pinterest/Sunset link. It will replace a small prefab goldfish pond we removed early this spring. Maybe this will be an alternative plan since summer is finally here and I have to have that soothing water sound outside our porch!

Here's mine - the birdbath keeps overflowing, dripping into the little stream, then into the pond, then back up to the birdbath again. My father made the birdbath for me.

One caveat not mentioned here is the need to ensure that all the water falls back into the base pot, otherwise you will constantly have to re-fill it. Bubblers that are only a few inch high tend not to have this problem as much as some of the higher fountains where the water falls in a bell or cone shape. With those types, you'll want to have a catchment area around the fountain that will return all the water to the basin - the size of that area depends upon the height of the fountain, the strength of the winds, etc.
